The Face of The Strip is Changing Rapidly with New Hotels and Even Grander Billboards
The Sunset Strip, located in Los Angeles, has a rich history that dates back decades and has been home to rock stars, mobsters, and Hollywood celebrities. The area is a hub of entertainment, culture, and history that has fascinated people around the world. Our GPS-guided audio tour of the Sunset Strip is a self-guided walking tour that covers the most notorious spots, including the Whisky a Go Go, the Viper Room, and the Rainbow Bar and Grill. It is available on both iOS and Android devices and is based on our popular Voicemap tour.
We felt the need to update the tour just three years after we originally published it because the commercial real estate surroundings, including the emphasis on the billboards as a distinguishing cultural highlight, is rapidly changing the look and feel of this iconic boulevard. The tour takes you on a journey through the history of the Sunset Strip, highlighting the most important landmarks and telling the stories of the people who have made it famous. One of the highlights of the tour is the story of the Whisky a Go Go, which was once the epicenter of the rock and roll scene on the Strip. You’ll learn about the famous bands that got their start at the venue, including The Doors, Led Zeppelin, and The Who. Another highlight is the Viper Room, owned by Johnny Depp, and the site of the tragic death of River Phoenix in 1993. You’ll learn about the club’s history, ties to the mob, and the many famous performers who have graced its stage.
The tour also takes you through the history of the Rainbow Bar and Grill, from its beginnings as a speakeasy during Prohibition to its current status as a beloved hangout for rock stars and celebrities. Additionally, you’ll learn about the role that the mob played in the history of the Sunset Strip, the rise and fall of the rock and roll scene, and the many scandals and controversies that have taken place on this famous stretch of road connecting Beverly Hills to Hollywood.
With the revamped audio tour, this walk along Sunset Boulevard between Crescent Heights Blvd and N. Doheny Dr. is a much more engaging experience. The update includes new stories, new photos, enhanced music and updates about new construction ,including a new Viper Room. It also covers the current controversy about billboard signage on the Sunset Strip that is related to West Hollywood’s policies to integrate billboards, architecture, public art and entertainment to honor the traditions and character of West Hollywood. These changes will allow digital billboards on the Sunset Strip in exchange for a share of advertising revenue. However, some residents have raised issues with bringing more digital billboards to the Sunset Strip because of complaints of overly bright lights and colors that intrude on apartments at night.
